Press Release : When will we have structural funds for private initiatives?

The European Union of Developers and House Builders is pleased with the initiative, but is deeply concerned that the Commission intends to expand the field of application of Structural Funds exclusively to «social» housing. If we truly want private and social housing to conform to the highest European standards of energy efficiency, it is not reasonable to limit the investment of Structural Funds to social housing, to the exclusion of other forms of housing.

European Developers launch Sustainability Charter

On the occasion of  the 2008 Green Week, the European Union of Developers and House Builders (UEPC) representing the private sector of developers and house builders in Europe has launched its Sustainability Charter.

§ The Charter sets out the UEPC's commitment to playing its full part in promoting sustainable development in the built environment in the 21st century. The charter is founded on the principle that sustainable development should contribute to future social cohesion and economic viability as well as protecting the environment.

§ The UEPC principal initial focus is on reducing CO2 emissions associated with the built envi-ronment, on which UEPC seeks synergies between action relating to new construction and the need to tackle and improve the environmental performance of the much larger existing building stock.

§ UEPC sets out what it sees as the main policy challenges for the evolution of building perform-ance standards, integrating relevant aspects of energy policy, the need to consider consumer requirements, the promotion of innovation, allowing for the wide range of different solutions needed in different parts of Europe and developing necessary skills and supply chains.

§ The UEPC commits to working with all relevant governmental and non-governmental partners on these issues and sets out in the charter its undertaking to work with its members to identify issues, contribute solutions and disseminate information towards the overarching objective of sustainable development in the built environment.

§ As a basis for partnership working, the Charter also sets out the areas of policy formulation, standard-setting and funding that the UEPC believes the European institutions should consider in developing an effective integrated strategy for sustainable development in the built environment.

European Study on housing for Senior Citizens

The European Union of Developers and House Builders (UEPC) has published a study on Housing for Senior Citizens.

In co-operation with the German federation, Bundesverband Freier Immobilien- und Whungsunternehmen (BFW), UEPC carried out a survey in various European countries.

What came out of that survey is that private developers and house builders will play an increasing active role in this segment.   Actually the number of senior citizens in Europe is growing exponentially while de public sector and social insurance funds will not be able to bear the burden of nursing and accommodating these elderly.

A hard copy of the study can be requested by sending a message to info@uepc.org.   The electronic version is downloadable here below.
